Allah hus-samad

Allah—the Sustainer ˹needed by all˺.

He has never had offspring, nor was He born.

Wa lam yakul-lahoo kufuwan ahad

And there is none comparable to Him.”

2. Teach your kid the interpretation of surah Ikhlas.

The second step in making learning surah Ikhlas for kids easy and fun is helping them understand the meaning of the verses in a simple way.

Here is Surah Ikhlas Tafsir Ibn-Kathir:

﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ﴾

(Say: “He is Allah, One.”) meaning, He is the One, the Singular, Who has no peer, no assistant, no rival, no equal and none comparable to Him. This word (Al-Ahad) cannot be used for anyone in affirmation except Allah the Mighty and Majestic, because He is perfect in all of His attributes and actions. Concerning His saying,

(Allah As-Samad.) `Ikrimah reported that Ibn `Abbas said, “This means the One Who all of the creation depends upon for their needs and their requests.” `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas, “He is the Master Who is perfect in His sovereignty, the Most Noble Who is perfect in His nobility, the Most Magnificent Who is perfect in His magnificence, the Most Forbearing Who is perfect in His forbearance, the All-Knowing Who is perfect in His knowledge, and the Most Wise Who is perfect in His wisdom. He is the One Who is perfect in all aspects of nobility and authority. He is Allah, glory be unto Him. These attributes are not befitting anyone other than Him. He has no coequal and nothing is like Him. Glory be to Allah, the One, the Irresistible.” Al-A`mash reported from Shaqiq, who said that Abu Wa’il said,

(As-Samad.) is the Master Whose control is complete.”

Allah is Above having Children and procreating

Then Allah says,

(He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.) meaning, He does not have any child, parent or spouse. Mujahid said,

(And there is none comparable to Him.) “This means He does not have a spouse.”

3. Keep reciting the surah.

The third step in making learning surah Ikhlas for kids easy and fun is to read the surah and repeat it a couple of times and ask your kids to repeat after you until they master its verses. Then ask them to recite the verses on their own. You could even make it a competition and give a prize to the one who gets it right.

Abu Sa’id narrated that a man heard another man reciting Qul Huwallahu Ahad and repeating it. The next morning, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and told him about that. The man thought that it was too little, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is equivalent to one-third of the Quran.” [Al-Bukhari (6643)]

Abu’l-Darda narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Is any one of you unable to recite one-third of the Quran in one night?” They said, “How could anyone read one-third of the Quran?” He said, “Qul Huwallahu Ahad is equivalent to one-third of the Quran.” [Muslim (811)]

Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Gather together, for I will recite to you one-third of the Quran.” So those who could gather together gathered there, then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out and recited Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad, and then he went in. They said to one another, perhaps there has been some news from heaven on account of which he has gone inside (the house). Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out and said, “I told you that I was going to recite to you one-third of the Quran. Verily it is equivalent to one-third of the Quran.” [Muslim (812)]

I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” [Grade: Hasan, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2910, Book 45, Hadith 36]

Ahmad reported from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri that a man said, O Messenger of Allah, I have a neighbour who prays at night and he only ever recites Qul huwa Allahu ahad as if he did not think much of this. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is equivalent to one-third of the Quran. (al-Musnad, 10965)

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his Companions: Could any one of you not recite one-third of the Quran in one night? They found the idea too difficult, and said, Who among us could do that, O Messenger of Allah? He said Allahul-ahad, al-samad [i.e., Surat al-Ikhlas] is one-third of the Quran. (Reported by al-Bukhari, 4628)

To make learning surah Ikhlas for kids fun teach them about the following hadiths and what our beloved prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said about the virtues of surah Ikhlas.

`Aishah reported that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to bed, he would cup his hands together, blow into them, and recite into them Qul huwa Allahu ahad [Surat al-Ikhlas], Qul a’udhu bi Rabbil-falaq [Surat al-Falaq] and Qul a’udhu bi Rabbil-nas [Surat al-Nas] (these are the last 3 surahs of the Quran). Then he would wipe as much of his body as he could with his hands, starting with his head and face, and the front of his body. He would do this three times. (Reported by al-Bukhari, 4630)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever recites Qul huwa Allahu ahad ten times, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise. (Sahih al-Jami’ al-Saghir, 6472).

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir said: I met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he said to me, O ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir, shall I not teach you some Surahs the like of which have not been revealed in the Tawrat (Torah) or the Zabur (Psalms) or the Injil (Gospel) or in the Quran? There is no night that comes but you should not recite (i.e., every night you should recite) Qul huwa Allahu ahad [Surat al-Ikhlas], Qul a’udhu bi Rabbil-falaq [Surat al-Falaq] and Qul a’udhu bi Rabbil-nas [Surat al-Nas]. ‘Uqbah said: So every night I would recite them. It became my duty to recite them because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had commanded me to do so. (Musnad Ahmad, 16810)
